On a light note the pupils of Jordanstown Schools had quite a social life where parties were concerned. Certainly up to the late 1960s. Read on --
Christmas time was an obvious time for partying and Jordanstown was no exception. There was the usual end of term party where games and edible treats were in abundance the usual visit from "Santa" was also appreciated by all members of the school -- thanks Sam!!!
There was also the very coveted "house party" held annually in the boarding house.
Each boarder was allowed to invite one or two guests from the "day pupils" and believe me competition was rife there was also facilities in extreme cases for the visitor to stay over.
This party would go on to late in the evening and the games etc were a little more for the older age groups. The younger boarders were allowed to stay up later but not allowed to stay up for the whole proceedings.
For many years there was an annual visit from members of the Jewish community who kindly supplied a large party with eating and many games .. particular favourite was Uncle Alfies "Double Your Money" where a few pupils were picked at random and gambled questions for real cash!!! We recall the names Eileen Shredge, Alfie Scott (now deceased) and his wife Betty Scott who played the piano and sang during the entertainment.
A fairly lavish party would follow where small gifts would be given to each pupil.
Two local to Belfast firms the Gallaghers "Happiness and Joy fund" held an annual December party in their Belfast canteen. Lavish presents were handed out by Santa after the food.
Mackies Iron Foundry also ran an annual party during December again on their Belfast premises.
Both these parties were held on Saturdays. I do not personally recall these parties and wonder if they came to Belfast residents only or the "Blind" department? Perhaps a run off from the Lisburn Road days.
Margaret Clarke has recollections of at least one party held on board the Naval training ship docked in Belfast. No further details are known.
