It was planned early in the 1960s that the visually handicapped department could have a short cruise on the "MV Maid of Antrim" based at Crumlin county Antrim.
The pupils were bussed to the jetty in Antrim town at the end of the Six Mile water. Here they boarded the vessel.
The cruise was up the river Bann to the main eel fishing ports along the route. Then returning by bus to school.
Packed lunches were supplied and the boat had its own shop where sweets and lemonade were available along with tea and coffee.
I recall some discussion as to who was paying for this trip but it was financed independently and was not done at any expense to the school.
I well remember this was my first trip on this vessel and I can still see James Duncan taking the wheel at one stage of the voyage. Indeed I believe most of us got a "turn".
